General Finishes Exterior 450 Topcoat is a clear-drying protective finish formulated for vertical exterior surfaces where enhanced durability, weather resistance, and a clean, natural appearance are desired. Its semi-gloss finish provides a subtle sheen that highlights the character of the underlying wood while adding a protective layer.
Exterior 450 is well suited for a variety of exterior woodworking and finishing projects, including fences, patio furniture, garage doors, entrance doors, and interior windows. It can also be used as a clear protective coat or as an optional topcoat over General Finishes Milk Paint.
Exterior 450 is fortified with UV absorbers designed to help stabilize the finish when exposed to outdoor conditions. It also contains built-in mildewcide to help retard mold and mildew growth, making it a practical choice for many vertical exterior applications.
Important: Exterior 450 is not recommended for use as a deck finish. For exterior projects, always ensure that the stain or coating underneath is specifically rated for outdoor exposure.
Exterior 450 can be applied with a quality brush or an HVLP sprayer, providing flexibility for both smaller woodworking projects and larger surfaces. It can be applied over most water-based and solvent-based stains, but compatibility should always be confirmed by testing the complete finishing system in an inconspicuous area before beginning the project.
The semi-gloss sheen offers a balanced appearance between satin and high-gloss finishes. It provides noticeable luster while maintaining the natural visual appeal of the wood beneath, making it an excellent option when a more polished exterior finish is desired.
Exterior 450 meets the environmental GREEN guidelines established for Architectural, Cabinets, and Furniture under EPA 40 CFR Parts 9, 59 & 63. It also meets guidelines associated with California Wood Coatings under SCAQMD Rule 1136, the Kitchen Cabinet Makers Association Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP), and the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (USGBC LEED) requirements.
For the best results, apply Exterior 450 to a properly prepared, clean, and dry surface under suitable environmental conditions. Allow each coat to dry thoroughly before applying additional coats, and lightly sand between coats with 320-grit or finer paper to promote a smooth, professional finish. Always test the finish and its compatibility with existing coatings in an inconspicuous location before completing the entire project.
