General Finishes Exterior 450 Topcoat is a clear-drying protective finish formulated specifically for vertical exterior surfaces. Its durable, weather-resistant formulation is an excellent choice for protecting outdoor woodworking projects such as fences, patio furniture, garage doors, entrance doors, and exterior-facing windows. The clear finish helps preserve the natural appearance and character of the surface while providing a protective topcoat.
Exterior 450 is fortified with UV absorbers to help stabilize the finish when exposed to sunlight and includes a built-in mildewcide to help retard the growth of mold and mildew. Its satin sheen produces a smooth, refined low-luster appearance that enhances the finished surface without creating a highly reflective gloss.
This versatile topcoat can be used as a clear protective finish or as an optional protective coating over General Finishes Milk Paint. It can also be applied over most water-based and solvent-based stains when the underlying coating has been properly prepared and is compatible with exterior use.
Apply Exterior 450 to a clean, dry, and properly prepared surface using a quality brush or HVLP sprayer. Do not apply when temperatures are below 60° F. Drying time is generally approximately 1 to 2 hours, but actual results may vary depending on temperature, humidity, ventilation, application thickness, and other environmental conditions.
For projects requiring multiple coats, lightly sand between coats with 320-grit or finer sandpaper after the previous coat has dried. Remove all sanding dust before applying the next coat to achieve a smooth, professional-looking finish.
Exterior 450 can be applied over most water-based and solvent-based stains. Because compatibility may vary based on the underlying coating, surface condition, and application method, test the complete finishing system in an inconspicuous area before beginning the final application.
Exterior 450 is intended for vertical exterior surfaces and is not recommended as a deck finish. For outdoor projects, any stain, paint, or color coat underneath the Exterior 450 topcoat should also be specifically rated for exterior exposure. Proper surface preparation, suitable application conditions, and routine maintenance are important for achieving dependable long-term performance.
Exterior 450 meets environmental GREEN guidelines established for Architectural, Cabinets, and Furniture under EPA 40 CFR Parts 9, 59 & 63. It also meets guidelines associated with California Wood Coatings under SCAQMD Rule 1136, the Kitchen Cabinet Makers Association Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP), and the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program.
Clean brushes, spray equipment, and other applicable tools with soap and water after use, following the equipment manufacturer's cleaning recommendations.
General Finishes Exterior 450 Satin Topcoat provides a practical combination of exterior protection, UV stabilization, and mildew resistance in a clear, low-luster finish. The gallon size is well suited for larger woodworking and finishing projects where a durable protective coating is needed without significantly changing the appearance of the underlying surface.
