Wood Bowl Finish is ideal for woodworkers and turners who want a protective finish that is easy to apply by hand. It can be applied over raw or stained wood and is designed to provide dependable protection without requiring an overly complicated finishing process.

Recommended Uses

Wood Bowl Finish is designed for decorative wooden bowls, turned wood projects, and other ornamental woodworking applications. It can be used over both unfinished and previously stained wood when a durable oil-based protective finish is desired.

Important: For countertops and other surfaces that are actively used for chopping or cutting, General Finishes Butcher Block Oil should be used instead of Wood Bowl Finish.

Application Instructions

For the best results, follow these application steps when applying Wood Bowl Finish over raw or stained wood:

1. Provide adequate ventilation: Work in a well-ventilated area during application and while the finish is drying.
2. Stir thoroughly: Stir the finish thoroughly before use to reincorporate solids that may have settled to the bottom of the container. Urethane topcoats are relatively thin, and the flatting agents used to create lower-sheen finishes can settle quickly. Stir and decant only the amount needed immediately, or continue stirring frequently throughout the application process.
3. Prepare the wood: Make sure the wood surface is clean and completely dry before applying the finish. Remove dirt, dust, grease, and other contaminants that could interfere with adhesion or produce an uneven finish.
4. Thin if desired: Wood Bowl Finish may be thinned with 10% to 15% mineral spirits when a thinner consistency is preferred for application.
5. Apply three coats: Apply three coats for the recommended level of protection. Do not apply more than three coats, as additional coats will not improve the durability of the finish.
6. Apply by hand: Apply a liberal amount of finish using a cotton cloth, natural-bristle brush, foam brush, or staining pad. Use smooth, even strokes and maintain light lap lines. Select a larger applicator for larger surfaces to help maintain an even application.
7. Wipe away excess: After application, wipe away excess finish evenly with the grain using a clean cloth or absorbent paper towel. Apply light pressure to help create a smooth, uniform coating.
8. Sand between coats: Once the previous coat is ready for recoating, lightly finish-sand between coats using a 220- to 320-grit foam sanding pad. Sanding between coats helps improve smoothness and provides a better surface for adhesion.
9. Remove sanding dust: Thoroughly remove dust before applying the next coat. Use a vacuum, compressed air, tack cloth, or a water-dampened rag to leave the surface clean and ready for additional finish.

Application Tips

For a consistent finish, apply Wood Bowl Finish in smooth, even strokes and work with the grain whenever possible. Avoid leaving excessive finish on the surface, and wipe away the excess evenly before it begins to set. Thorough stirring is especially important because solids and flatting agents can settle rapidly during storage.

When applying multiple coats, lightly sanding between coats helps remove minor imperfections and creates a smoother final surface. Always remove sanding residue completely before continuing with the next coat.
