General Finishes Exterior 450 Topcoat is a clear-drying protective finish formulated for vertical exterior surfaces where durable, attractive protection is desired. The finish provides a clear protective layer while allowing the natural appearance of the underlying wood or finish to remain visible.

Exterior 450 is fortified with UV absorbers designed to help stabilize the finish when exposed to outdoor conditions. It also contains a built-in mildewcide to help retard the growth of mold and mildew. This combination makes Exterior 450 a practical choice for protecting appropriately prepared vertical surfaces exposed to the elements.

This finish can be used as a clear topcoat or as an optional protective topcoat over General Finishes Milk Paint. For exterior applications, always make sure the stain or coating underneath is also rated for outdoor exposure. Exterior 450 can be applied over most water-based and solvent-based stains, but testing a small, hidden area first is recommended to confirm compatibility and the desired appearance.

Application & Drying

Exterior 450 can be applied with a quality brush or an HVLP sprayer. Under suitable conditions, the finish dries to a clear coating in approximately 1 to 2 hours, although actual drying time can vary depending on temperature, humidity, airflow, and application thickness.

• Apply by brush or HVLP sprayer.
• Do not apply when temperatures are below 60° F.
• Allow adequate drying time between coats.
• Lightly sand between coats using 320-grit or finer sandpaper.
• Always test compatibility in an inconspicuous area before applying over an existing finish.

Important Exterior Use Information

Exterior 450 is intended for vertical exterior applications and is not recommended as a deck finish. Horizontal surfaces such as decks experience substantially different exposure and wear conditions and require a coating specifically designed for that application.

When using Exterior 450 outdoors, the underlying stain or coating must also be suitable for exterior exposure. Proper surface preparation and application conditions are important for achieving the best possible performance and appearance.
