Aluminum Oxide (AO)
Aluminum oxide is produced by combining bauxite and other materials and firing them in an electric furnace. The resulting material is crushed and screened into specific grit sizes. Its naturally pyramidal grain shape and high strength make aluminum oxide a tough, durable abrasive that wears gradually during use.
Aluminum oxide is a versatile general-purpose abrasive commonly used for sanding bare wood, most metals—especially steel—leather, and a wide variety of other materials. Its durability and consistent cutting action make it one of the most widely used abrasive grains.
Paper Backing
Paper abrasive backings are available in different weights or thicknesses, designated from A, the lightest weight, through F, the heaviest. Lighter A-C weight papers are commonly used for power sanding with sheets and discs or for hand sanding. Heavier D, E, and F weights are used for power-sanding applications where increased backing strength is required.
The heavy F-weight backing used on these discs provides added durability for demanding sanding applications. Paper-backed abrasives are best suited to dry, relatively flat work and are particularly effective in finer grits where they can provide a smooth finish while maintaining an economical cost.
Paper backings can also be chemically treated to provide waterproof properties. Waterproof paper products are typically identified as waterproof or marked with abbreviations such as W/D or WP.
