Ignore the dangers of cross grain construction and at best you'll probably be explaining big cracks. Table top fasteners are one of the best ways to keep tops attached yet allow for wood movement. Just rip a saw kerf or route a 3/32 slot in the apron about 1/2 in from the edge slip in one leg of the stamped steel clip and fasten the other leg down using a #8 or #10 Round Washer head screw.
