Torx is a patented brand name for a six-pointed drive pattern developed in 1967 by Camcar Textronic. The Generic name is Start Drive is commonly used instead of the Trade Marked Torx to identify the six lobed drive system. Other companies have branded their own particular six-lobbed drive system like Spax has a T-Star and T-Star Plus. By design, the six lobbed drive resists Cam-Out better than Phillips (Phillips is designed to Cam-Out to prevent over torquing) and slotted head screws.
Sizes are numbered and all start with a T and range from 1 to 100. Starting with T-1 to T-10 they step up by increments of 1. From T-10 to T-45 they step up in increments of 5 and from T-50 to T100, they step up in increments of 10.
The Wire Detent on these bits are designed to hold the short bit into a hex bit holder that uses a snap ring inside the end.
It is so easy to install with automatic assembly equipment or by hand. You may have noticed that the Torx style fasteners are now used in most consumer products as well.
