General Finishes Flat Out Flat Top Coat - Pint

General Finishes Flat Out Flat is a self-crosslinking, water-based topcoat designed to provide furniture and woodworking projects with an exceptionally flat, soft-looking finish that closely mimics the lustrous appearance and feel of traditional wax. Its ultra-matte appearance enhances painted and stained surfaces while providing a protective finish suitable for a wide range of interior furniture projects.

The increased amount of matting agents used to achieve the distinctive flat appearance results in less clarity than higher-sheen finishes. Flat Out Flat may also show fingerprints more readily and provides slightly less durability than General Finishes High Performance Topcoat. For these reasons, it is best suited for medium- to low-use surfaces and is not recommended for kitchen cabinets, countertops, or table tops that receive frequent use.

Key Features

  • Ultra-Flat Appearance: Creates a soft, low-sheen finish that mimics the look and feel of wax.
  • Water-Based Formula: Offers a convenient alternative to traditional solvent-based finishes with low odor and easy application.
  • Self-Crosslinking Technology: Forms a protective finish as it cures for dependable performance on appropriate furniture surfaces.
  • UV Protection: Stabilized with UV absorbers to help maximize the performance and longevity of the finish.
  • Fast Drying: Allows additional coats to be applied after approximately 1 to 2 hours under suitable drying conditions.
  • Low Odor: Produces less odor than many conventional solvent-based finishes, making it a convenient choice for woodworking applications.
  • Nonflammable: Provides a nonflammable alternative to conventional lacquer finishes.
  • Flexible Application: Can be applied by brush or sprayed for convenient use on a variety of furniture and woodworking projects.

Recommended Applications

General Finishes Flat Out Flat is an excellent choice for furniture and decorative woodworking projects where an ultra-matte, wax-like appearance is desired. It is particularly well suited to medium- and low-use surfaces such as decorative furniture, accent pieces, cabinets with limited use, and other interior woodworking projects.

Because the flat finish contains additional matting agents that reduce clarity and slightly reduce durability compared with higher-performance finishes, it is not recommended for high-use surfaces such as kitchen cabinets and table tops.

Application Tips

  • Apply to a clean, dry, properly prepared surface.
  • Apply thin, even coats using a quality brush or appropriate spray equipment.
  • Allow approximately 1 to 2 hours between coats, depending on temperature, humidity, ventilation, and application thickness.
  • Lightly sand between coats with 320-grit sandpaper when appropriate to promote a smooth final surface.
  • Apply 3 to 5 coats for the best overall protection and finish appearance.
  • Allow the finish to dry and cure properly before placing the finished piece into service.
  • Always test the finish on a sample or inconspicuous area before applying it to the entire project.

Professional-Quality Furniture Protection

Flat Out Flat combines the convenience of a water-based finish with an understated, ultra-matte appearance. Its wax-like visual character makes it an attractive choice for furniture makers, woodworkers, refinishing professionals, and DIY enthusiasts who want to preserve the look of a project without adding a noticeable glossy sheen.

Environmentally Conscious Finish

General Finishes Flat Out Flat topcoats meet environmental GREEN guidelines established for architectural, cabinet, and furniture coatings, including EPA 40 CFR Parts 9, 59, and 63, California Wood Coatings SCAQMD Rule 1136, the Kitchen Cabinet Makers Association Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP), and the U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (USGBC LEED) guidelines.
