CMT Straight Bit Short Series - 1/4 in. Shank

The CMT Straight Bit Short Series is designed for efficient, precise routing when you need a clean, professional-quality edge. Featuring razor-sharp, double-faced cutting edges, this 1/8 in. diameter router bit delivers smooth, accurate cuts while providing excellent chip evacuation for consistent performance. Its compact short-series design is especially well suited for detailed routing applications where control and precision are essential.

Constructed from special Fatigue Proof® steel and high-quality micrograin carbide, this CMT straight bit is engineered to withstand demanding production environments while maintaining reliable cutting performance. The cutting edges are designed to provide a clean finish across a variety of plywood, composites, and natural woods.

A proprietary orange non-stick PTFE coating helps reduce the buildup of resin, pitch, and other machining residue on the bit. This helps maintain smoother cutting performance and makes the bit easier to keep clean. Each CMT router bit is subjected to strict quality-control testing to ensure accurate cutting tolerances, proper balance, and excellent concentricity.

Product Features

  • 1/8 in. cutting diameter: Ideal for detailed routing, trimming, grooving, and other precision applications.
  • 1/4 in. shank: Provides compatibility with routers and collets designed for 1/4 in. shanks.
  • Short Series design: Compact cutting geometry provides excellent control for precision routing applications.
  • Double-faced cutting edges: Razor-sharp cutters provide smooth, clean, and accurate results.
  • Fatigue Proof® steel: Durable tool body engineered for demanding woodworking applications.
  • Micrograin carbide: Provides sharp, durable cutting edges and long-lasting performance.
  • Excellent chip ejection: Helps promote cleaner and more consistent cutting.
  • Orange non-stick PTFE coating: Helps prevent resin, pitch, and other residue from adhering to the bit.
  • Precision manufacturing: Strict quality testing ensures accurate tolerances, balance, and concentricity.
  • Versatile material compatibility: Suitable for plywood, composites, hardwoods, softwoods, and other natural wood materials.

Ideal Applications

This CMT straight router bit is an excellent choice for precision woodworking and production applications requiring a small-diameter cutter. Use it for detail routing, grooving, dadoing, trimming, mortising, pattern work, and other operations where a clean, controlled cut is important.

How CMT Produces High-Quality Router Bits

  • Turning, Milling and Cutting: CMT has invested heavily in advanced automated manufacturing equipment. CNC machinery operated by specially trained technicians helps ensure that router-bit shanks and bodies are accurately machined, properly balanced, and manufactured to precise specifications.
  • Heat-Forged Steel Bodies: Large-diameter bits may require heat forging before the steel is turned into a precision-machined body. This additional manufacturing process creates a radial grain orientation that provides increased strength and durability where it is needed.
  • Precision Brazing: CMT has pioneered advanced brazing techniques for carbide-tipped tools. Computerized brazing equipment helps provide consistent results, while the silver-copper-silver brazing sandwich creates a strong bond between the steel body and carbide. The brazing construction also provides a shock-absorbing effect that helps protect carbide tips during demanding cuts.
  • Specially Formulated Carbide: CMT develops carbide formulations for specific cutting applications. Carbide composition can be optimized for different materials and cutting conditions, ranging from extremely hard formulations for demanding materials such as laminates to formulations designed to provide greater toughness and shock absorption.

Safety Precautions

  • Never use a router bit that is damaged, cracked, worn, or otherwise compromised.
  • Always operate the router bit at the manufacturer's recommended speed and feed rate.
  • Do not force the bit through the workpiece. Allow the cutter to perform the cutting.
  • Use particular care when making the initial cut with a small-diameter router bit.
  • For best results and increased control with small-diameter bits, make deeper cuts in multiple passes rather than attempting to remove excessive material in a single pass.
  • Always wear appropriate eye and hearing protection and follow the safety instructions for your router and workpiece.

Built for Precision and Production

With its 1/8 in. diameter, 1/4 in. shank, durable carbide construction, precision manufacturing, and non-stick PTFE coating, the CMT Straight Bit Short Series is built to deliver dependable performance for both professional woodworking and production environments. It combines accurate cutting geometry with durable materials to help you achieve clean, consistent results across a wide range of woodworking applications.
