CMT Straight Bit Short Series - 1/4 in. Shank

The CMT Straight Bit Short Series is designed for efficient, accurate routing when a clean, precise edge is essential. Featuring razor-sharp, double-faced cutting edges, this 1/4 in. diameter router bit combines dependable performance with the durability required for demanding woodworking applications. Its compact cutter design is well suited for general routing, grooving, dadoing, trimming, and other applications where controlled material removal and a smooth finish are important.

Constructed from special Fatigue Proof® steel and high-quality micrograin carbide, the bit is engineered to withstand demanding workloads while maintaining excellent cutting performance. The precision-ground cutting edges promote smooth, consistent cuts, while the geometry is designed to provide efficient chip ejection for cleaner operation and more uniform results.

A trademark orange non-stick PTFE coating helps reduce the buildup of resin, pitch, and other woodworking residue on the bit. This coating helps keep the cutting surfaces cleaner during use and makes routine maintenance easier. Every CMT router bit is subjected to strict quality-control testing for cutting tolerance, balance, and concentricity to ensure reliable performance.

The 1/4 in. shank provides compatibility with routers and collets designed for 1/4 in. shank router bits. This short-series configuration is an excellent choice for woodworkers, cabinetmakers, and production environments working with natural woods, plywood, composites, and other common woodworking materials.

Product Features

  • 1/4 in. Cutting Diameter: Ideal for precision routing, grooves, dados, trimming, and general-purpose material removal.

How CMT Produces High-Quality Router Bits

  • Precision Turning, Milling, and Cutting: CMT uses highly automated CNC production equipment operated by specially trained personnel to manufacture router-bit bodies and shanks with exceptional accuracy and balance.
  • Heat-Forged Steel Bodies: Larger-diameter CMT bits may undergo a heat-forging process before precision machining. This creates a favorable radial grain orientation that contributes additional strength and durability.
  • Precision Brazing: CMT uses specially designed computerized brazing equipment to create consistent bonds between steel bodies and carbide cutters. A silver-copper-silver brazing construction helps provide a strong connection while offering a shock-absorbing effect to help protect carbide tips during demanding cuts.
  • Application-Specific Carbide: CMT formulates carbide grades to suit different woodworking applications. Carbide compositions can be tailored for demanding materials such as laminates or for applications where greater impact resistance is required.
  • Precision Grinding and Sharpening: The final grinding and sharpening processes are performed to tight tolerances to produce accurately formed, exceptionally sharp cutting edges.

Applications

The CMT 1/4 in. Straight Bit is suitable for a broad range of woodworking tasks, including general stock removal, routing grooves and dados, trimming edges, and other precision routing operations. It can be used with natural hardwoods, softwoods, plywood, composites, and similar materials when used with the appropriate feed rate and cutting technique.

Safety Precautions

  • Never use a router bit that is damaged, cracked, bent, or excessively worn.
  • Always secure the bit properly in the router collet and follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation and operation.
  • Operate the router at the recommended speed and feed rate for the bit and material being cut.
  • Do not force the bit through the workpiece; excessive feed pressure can produce poor results and increase the risk of kickback or bit damage.
  • Use particular care when making the initial cut with a small-diameter router bit.
  • For best results with small-diameter bits, remove material in multiple passes rather than attempting to make an excessively deep cut in one pass.
  • Always wear appropriate eye and hearing protection and follow safe router operating practices.
