Tips for Longer Bit Life
- Make repeated shallow cuts and allow the bit to cool for two or three seconds between passes. This helps reduce heat buildup and can extend cutting-edge life.
- Do not exceed the recommended maximum speed for the material being drilled. Excessive RPM can create unnecessary heat and shorten bit life.
- Avoid applying excessive pressure while drilling. Heavy force can increase friction and overheating rather than improving cutting performance.
- When boring multiple holes for mortising or similar applications, clear chips from the previous hole before drilling the next one.
- Smaller Forstner bits can be used with a hand drill, although a drill press generally provides better control and more consistent results.
- Use caution with Forstner bits larger than 19 mm (3/4-in.) in a hand drill. If the bit catches an imperfection in the wood, the resulting reaction can cause loss of control or injury.
