Self-Drilling Screws Were Such a Good Idea That Everyone Wanted Them
In addition to the popular hex-drive style commonly used for assembling heating and air-conditioning ductwork, self-drilling screws are also available with a round washer head for applications such as attaching metal lath to steel studs.

Self-drilling screws feature a drill-point tip that cuts through steel before the screw threads tap into and secure themselves in the material. For best results, use a slower RPM and allow the self-drilling point time to cut through the steel, much like a drill bit.
