ProMax™ Optimized Thread Length™ Screws
Whether you are building attractive 2 x 4 furniture or doing light framing, ProMax™ Optimized Thread Length™ screws are designed to make assembly easier and help create tighter, cleaner joints.
The extra-long unthreaded shank helps prevent cross-threading and board jacking without requiring a separate clearance hole. The 1/8 in. length system also makes it easier to choose the longest practical screw without worrying about the point protruding through the back of the workpiece.
These Square Drive screws feature a self-drilling auger point, self-countersinking nibs, and a light lubricated finish intended for interior, non-visible applications.

What Optimized Thread Length Means
Deck screws are a good example of why thread length matters. A typical 3 in. screw used with 2 x 4 or 2 x 6 decking may have about 1 in. of unthreaded shank. Because standard decking material is approximately 1-1/2 in. thick, the threaded portion can bridge the joint between the top board and the framing below.
When the threads engage both pieces of material, the screw may not pull the boards tightly together. This can leave an uneven surface or lead to over-driving the screw in an attempt to close the gap.
ProMax™ screws are different. The thread length is optimized so the smooth shank can pass through the top board while the threads engage the material below. This helps reduce cross-threading and allows the screw to pull the joint together more effectively.
For best results, select a screw with an unthreaded shank length equal to or slightly greater than the thickness of the material being fastened. In many applications, the smooth shank and self-drilling point allow installation without pre-drilling.
