Bolts have a big advantage over screws in many applications: joints don't depend upon threads cut into the wood for their strength.
Hex Bolts or Hex Head Bolts have a six-sided head that is used to hold the bolt from spinning while the nut attached to the other end is tightened. The Hex Head can also be turned while the bolt is being inserted into a tapped hole to match the threads.
They are the industry standard for forged head fasteners and come in different Grades, coatings and materials. Check local building requirement for code on fasteners before building.
Hot dipped galvanized is a coating for very good corrosion resistance.
Torque washers are recommended for use with softwoods like pressure-treated lumber.
Warning: Do not mix metals like Galvanized and Stainless Steel. The mixing of dissimilar metals will cause Galvanic Corrosion. Please see our information in McFeely's University on Corrosion in Fasteners.
