220g Silicon Carbide (Wet/Dry) Sanding Sheets

Professional-Grade Silicon Carbide Abrasive for Fine Finishing

These 220g silicon carbide sanding sheets are designed for both wet and dry sanding applications where a smooth, consistent finish is essential. Featuring a durable A or C weight paper backing and resin-to-resin bonding, these waterproof abrasive sheets provide excellent performance for hand sanding, finish sanding, color sanding, and polishing applications.

Silicon carbide is an exceptionally hard, sharp abrasive grain that fractures during use to expose fresh cutting edges continually. This friability makes silicon carbide particularly effective for fine finishing operations on materials such as paint, varnish, lacquer, shellac, plastic, glass, rubber, and other surfaces requiring a refined finish.

Available in grits from 80 through 2000, these wet/dry sanding sheets are well suited for woodworking, furniture finishing, automotive refinishing, and specialty polishing applications. They can be used wet to reduce loading, control dust, and achieve an exceptionally smooth surface, or dry when the application calls for conventional sanding.

Key Features

  • Silicon Carbide Abrasive: Extremely sharp, hard grains provide fast, clean cutting and consistent finishing performance.
  • Wet or Dry Use: Waterproof construction allows the sheets to be used for both wet and dry sanding applications.
  • Resin-to-Resin Bond: Durable bonding helps maintain abrasive grain integrity throughout use.
  • A or C Weight Paper Backing: Flexible paper backing is well suited for hand sanding and sheet or disc power-sanding applications.
  • Closed Coat: Dense abrasive grain coverage provides a consistent scratch pattern and smooth finish.
  • Wide Grit Range: Available from 80 to 2000 grit for applications ranging from material refinement to ultra-fine finishing.

Recommended Applications

  • Furniture and woodworking finish sanding
  • Varnish, lacquer, shellac, and oil finishes
  • Automotive paint and final color sanding
  • Plastic polishing and finishing
  • Glass polishing and surface refinement
  • Rubber and other soft materials
  • Sealer and coating preparation
  • Fine hand sanding and finishing

Silicon Carbide (SC) Abrasive

Silicon carbide is manufactured from silica sand and coke through a high-temperature electric furnace process. The resulting abrasive is crushed and screened to produce precisely graded particles. Silicon carbide grains have an exceptionally sharp, angular structure that provides aggressive cutting action while also making the abrasive relatively friable.

As pressure is applied during sanding, the abrasive grain can fracture and expose new sharp edges. This self-sharpening characteristic helps provide a highly consistent finish throughout the useful life of the abrasive. Because silicon carbide is comparatively brittle, it is generally best suited to finishing and polishing operations rather than heavy material-removal applications.

Silicon carbide is particularly effective on materials including glass, plastic, rubber, paint, varnish, lacquer, and sealers. It can also be used on very soft woods, although an open-coat aluminum oxide abrasive may provide longer service life for many wood-sanding applications.

Paper Backing

Paper abrasive backings are available in different weights, designated from A through F, with A being the lightest and F the heaviest. A, B, and C weight papers are commonly used for hand sanding and sheet or disc power-sanding applications, while heavier D, E, and F weights are used for more demanding power-sanding and belt applications.

These silicon carbide wet/dry sheets use A or C weight paper, providing the flexibility needed for hand sanding and fine finishing. The paper is chemically treated to resist water and is identified as waterproof, wet/dry (W/D), or WP.

Important Considerations for Paper Abrasives

  1. Use on Dry Work for Paper Belts: Waterproof A/C weight papers are designed for sheet and disc applications rather than belt sanding.
  2. Best on Relatively Flat Surfaces: Paper backings do not conform to contours as easily as cloth backings and may crease, kink, or tear when used on highly contoured surfaces.
  3. Fine to Medium Grit Applications: Paper performs particularly well in finer grits, where it can produce an excellent finish while offering an economical alternative to heavier backing materials.
  4. Heat Management: Abrasive materials generate heat during sanding. Proper belt dimensions, operating conditions, and application selection help dissipate heat and extend abrasive life.
