ProMax™ Optimized Thread Length™: What It Means and Why You'll Like It!

Deck screws are a good example of Optimized Thread Length. The screws normally used to install 2 x 4's or 2 x 6's for decking are 3 inches long and have 1 inch of unthreaded shank. Since 2 x 4 and 2 x 6 deck material is 1-1/2 inches thick, the threads bridge the joint, as shown, resulting in an uneven and unsightly surface, or screws that are over-driven trying to “pull the board down.”

ProMax™ screws are different: Thread length is optimized to eliminate cross threading, and the 1/8” length system allows use of the longest possible screw. In most cases, the smooth shank and self-drilling point allow installation without predrilling! Just select a screw that provides an unthreaded shank length equal to or slightly greater than the material thickness being fastened.

Deep Thread: Characterized by a reduced diameter shank resulting in a deep thread profile. A single lead thread, meaning that one revolution advances the screw one pitch. (Pitch is equal to 1 divided by the number of threads per inch. For a screw with 10 threads per in., one revolution will advance the screw 1/1O in. into the wood.)

The deep thread form provides superior resistance to pull-out.

Bugle Head is a tapered head snugs screw into the workpiece without requiring a countersink. Mostly found on Drywall Screws where it will dimple the paper and not break it. The bugle head design countersinks consistently and neatly and the deep recess provides maximum driver bit fit.

It looks like th Bell part of a "Bugle" or Trumpet.

As most woodworkers are aware, as of January 1, 2004, the pressure treated lumber industry has voluntarily switched from CCA chemical processes to alternative treating methods such as ACQ. While significant testing has been performed on galvanized screws to ensure their compatibility with the new treatment processes, to date SS is the only corrosion resistant material to have gained widespread acceptance for use with these new materials.

ProMax SS screws are the ideal choice for use with these new materials. Note that because of the inherently lower strength of SS compared to hardened steel, ProMax SS screws are all #10's, which provides roughly the same torque strength as the #8 ProMax No-Co-Rode screws.

SS: No discussion of corrosion resistance would be complete without mention of SS screws. Although all products c01rnde sooner or later, SS continues to provide excellent protection. Since the carbon content of stainless is quite low, oxidation (rusting) is also quite low. However, since the carbon content is low, the steel cannot be heat treated to adequate levels. As a result the screws are soft and break easily when used in wood applications where high levels of torque strength are required. Pre-drilling all screw holes and using larger gauges of screws can compensate for this problem.

The Nickel used in manufacturing SS make them non-magnetic and will not hold to a magnetic bit.
