Finally, Star-Drive Screws Good Enough to Be McFeely's!

If you are a fan of Star-Drive Screws, we have some good news for you: McFeely's has contracted with a major screw manufacturer for production of Star Drive screws to our standards. That means that you won't give up any of the strength and general product quality that you have come to expect from McFeely's just so you can use the popular Star recess.

Anyone that has ever worked on an American-made automobile built in the last 50 years or so will quickly recognize the Star-Drive recess (also known as 6 lobe, and trademarked by Cam-Carr Textron® as Torx®). It was developed to provide superior resistance to cam-out compared to several of the other common recesses of the time, and it could be used with auto-feed screw guns.

While they do not have the "stick fit" of Square Drive, the unique Star-Drive recess does center the bit very nicely, and like Square Drive, driver bit cam-out is virtually eliminated. These screws have the same deep threads, semi-flared head, and superior strength of our other Square Drive Screws. Auger point.

Deep Thread: Characterized by a reduced diameter shank resulting in a deep thread profile. A single lead thread, meaning that one revolution advances the screw one pitch. (Pitch is equal to 1 divided by the number of threads per inch. For a screw with 10 threads per in., one revolution will advance the screw 1/1O in. into the wood.)

The deep thread form provides superior resistance to pull-out.

The Type 17 point is not a thread style but can enhance the performance qualities of most thread styles used in the woodworking industry. A slot or notch is cut out at the point of the screw that acts like an auger or drilling tip. The slot carves away the material thus allowing it to self-drill itself into most types of wood. In many instances it can eliminate the need for a pre-drilled hold to relieve splitting. The Type 17 point is excellent for hardwoods, softwoods, particleboard and especially MDF.

Yellow Zinc referrers to the plating process where the color of the chromate that is applied after zinc has been deposited on to the surface of the part. Yellow chromate adds a layer that prevents the zinc from corroding increasing the overall protection of the finish. Yellow Zinc has a rainbow or iridescent appearance with dominant yellow tones.
