Barrell nuts, sometimes called Dowel nuts (because they are like a short piece of a dowel), are cylindrical metal nuts used with furniture connector bolts in order to join two pieces of wood together in Ready-to-Assemble furniture (RTA) or Knock Down Furniture (KD) applications such as bed posts to the rails. In some cases a combination of one bolt and one barrel nut is used with dowel pins to keep the bed rail from turning. In other applications, two bolts and two dowel nuts are used in each connection.
The threaded portion of the barrel nut is unique because it passes through the sides of the nut, and are often called cross dowel nuts.
These Barrel Nuts are used with our Connecting Screws to form a joint that does not depend on the notoriously poor fastener holding power of end grain for its joint strength. Construction of the joint is easy. Drill a 1/4 in. dia hole into the end grain as clearance for the connector screw. Then drill an intersecting 13/32 in. diameter hole for the 3/8 in.dia barrel nut. Drop in the barrel nut, align it to the connector screw hole, slip in the connector screw, and you're done.
The holes in the barrel nuts are offset 1/4 in. from the bottom or centered as stated.
