Nylon Lock Nuts are designed to apply pressure to the upper threads to make it more difficult to back off from vibration or movement once tightened. A nylon ring or collar slightly smaller than the major diameter of the machine screw threads applies pressure by expanding, rather than cutting, conforming threads into the nylon. A question that is often asked is: Can lock nuts be reused? The answer is yes, no, and maybe. Yes, in most applications, if the nylon is not damaged during installation. They can be used repeatedly. Maybe, in the aviation industry, there are limited if the prevailing torque is within certain specifications on a preloaded fastener. The USAF says No, they must be replaced after removal.
