Flat washers are used to distribute the load of a fastener over a wider area to provide greater holding power. Fender or oversized washer distributes the load more evenly, preventing crushing of the wood fibers. Extra-Thick Washers prevents distortion. Ever wonder why bolted connections in pressure-treated lumber often loosen? The wood fibers are not strong enough to prevent crushing; standard washers are so thin that they deform as the wood beneath them compresses over time, so the joints eventually loosen.
