ProMaster® Plus patented thread design features cutters built right into the thread design. Tiny saw blades are formed into the first three to four thread revolutions that cut through wood while displacing a minimum amount of material. By displacing less material than a Type-17 point, the ProMaster thread design offers greater holding power. Our testing shows that it offers 15 percent more holding power than a double Type-17 screw sold by our competitors while eliminating splitting. This new revolution in thread design technology was developed for and is very popular in the furniture and woodworking industry for its ease of driving while offering optimum holding power.

ProMax® screws are optimized Thread Length to prevent Board Jacking. The screws normally used to install 2x4s or 2x6s for decking are 3 in. long and have 1 in. of unthreaded shank. Since 2x4 and 2x6 deck material are 1-1/2 in. thick, the threads bridge the joint, resulting in either an uneven and unsightly surface or screws that are over-driven trying to "pull the board down. ProMax screws are different. Thread length is optimized to eliminate cross-threading. Plus, the 1/8 in. L system allows the use of the longest possible screw.

PocketMax® screws are heat-treated making our screws tough enough to drive into Red Oak without a pilot hole (while we do not recommend that), yet tough enough to resist the forces trying to blow apart the driver bit recess as the screw is driven in, tough enough to resist breakage when a load is applied to the joint. They have an oversized Fillister (sometimes called "Cheese") head to minimize crushing in softwoods, an extended unthreaded shank to avoid cross threading or board jacking, and have superior holding power to a washer head screw. Go into most hardware stores and home centers, and the screws you find will be poorly heat-treated, or not heat-treated at all!

ProMaster® wood screws are thicker and made of softer metal, making them more snap-resistant than the brittle steel used in drywall screws. They get heat-treated for strength, but we suggest you use a pilot hole for most applications, like hardwoods, to guarantee that your screw will not break off and your wood will not crack. Driving a screw into wood causes friction. This friction results in the screw heating up. This causes flaws in the material. The screw will expand inside the predrilled hole, which was drilled for the specific size; the screw will seize in the hole. ProMaster® is primarily for connecting wood to wood and is known for the clamping force it provides to strengthen a joint. This is achieved by having 2/3 of the screw threaded with a deep gripping pitch and a smooth shank near the head.

Choosing a Kreg Screw

Kreg Screws are available in several different types, each with unique qualities that optimize performance in specific applications. Once you understand these qualities, it’s easy to choose the correct Kreg Screw. Kreg Screw Qualities

Composition:

Zinc screws are recommended for a wide variety of indoor projects where moisture is not a concern.

Blue-Kote™ screws are the best choice for damp or wet applications and work with treated lumber.

Stainless screws are designed for use in extreme environments that are exposed to moisture and corrosive elements.

Thread Style:

Coarse-Thread screws are recommended for use with softwoods like cedar, pine, fir, etc. — as well as for sheet goods such as plywood and MDF — that are soft and not very dense. Coarse screws have deep, aggressive threads that bite into those soft fibers to ensure solid holding power.

Fine-Thread screws are the preferred choice for hardwoods like cherry, maple, oak, etc. that are hard and dense. Fine threads are less aggressive, so they’ll drive without splitting, but these screws have a higher number of threads per inch to ensure great holding power.

Head Style:

Maxi-Loc screws are a great choice for the majority of applications. These Kreg Screws have a large head that provides maximum bearing surface as the screw pulls tight in the pocket.

Pan-Head screws are perfect for dense hardwoods and for ¹/₂" thick stock. Their smaller shank reduces the chance of splitting, and the smaller head allows them to fit places where space is limited and/or tight pocket-hole spacing is desired.
