These screws are designed for composite decks. If you use a wood screw or traditional deck screw on plastic decking, you get the Volcano look shown in the image. Composite deck screws start and drive like a normal screw, but just before it counter-sinks, the reverse threads and cap head will pull the plastic material back into the hole. The screw will sit flat most of the time.
We know of more than twenty-five distinct brands of composite decking, and there is no clear winner in our testing. The screws that work great in one brand are less than what you would expect in the next. Using a cap head with reverse threads makes a dramatic difference in plastic, preventing the mushroom effect,but they do not all sit completely flat. These screws do not hold well in wood.
