Trim head screws are great for installing trim moldings in softwoods, but generally require pre-drilling in hardwoods to avoid splitting, or worse yet, stripping of the recess. Standard countersinks either have too large a countersink or too small a pilot bit. The result is an oversized head hole that requires excessive filling, or a pilot hole that isn’t big enough to clear the screw threads. Our new trim head countersink drills a 1/8" clearance hole and has a 1/4" diameter countersink that fits most trim head screws perfectly. You will need to eye-ball the depth. On countersinks this small, the use of a stop collar prevents wood chips from clearing, leading to heat build up, which can prematurely dull the edge on the countersink. Made in USA.

Comments about 1/8'' Dia. Std. Point x 1/4'' Trim Head Countersink:
Drills very well. I used on IPE Tongue & Groove lip to predrill for stainless steel trim head screws. On 600 sq ft of 3" decking, I went through 8-10 bits.

Takes a bit of getting used to in order to hit the "sweet spot" (not too deep or too shallow), but once you get the hang of it, it will provide clean countersinks at the proper depth. The area where the bit and countersink come together frequently clogged with chips while drilling composite decking. The 1/8" bit is actually a bit too large for many trim screws.

I install alot of Ipe decking, this bit is great for face screws that are to be plugged, If used properly it will last quite awhile, but that takes practice. If you have never used this bit it may seem really brittle and prone to breaking, but with experience I can make the counter sink last for a few decks.

Great product. Drill bit had no walking and stayed sharp even after 50 to 60 counter sinks in oak.

Countersink worked great for trim head screws.Only shortcoming--as described in the catalog--you have to control the depth by eye or by using a drill press.
