Installing any of these inserts goes easier by using a bolt and washer. Slip a washer, with a decent outside diameter, onto the bolt. Thread the appropriate length bolt into the insert, and use it to drive the insert in with a socket wrench. If you cut off the head of a longer bolt, you can install the shank of the bolt in a drill press, and install the inserts easily and straight by turning the chuck by hand to screw the insert in. The washer assures that you install the insert flush with the wood surface.

These worked great in my practice piece of softwood, but when i tried to use them for a yellow birch tabletop, even with the special tool for installing them, the little tabs wanted to strip and break off before the inserts were all the way in. Eventually I had to use slightly bigger pilot holes than i wanted, but they still held fine and were easy to use once installed.
