Square Drive Recess

Square Drive

Square Drive (and “Combo” Square Drive) screws are designed so that the driver bits fit snugly into the recess. This tight fit holds the screw to the driver bit allowing for one handed driving in many applications.

The Square Drive screw was invented by P.L. Robertson in 1908 and was the first production fastener with an internal recess. The square recess allowed for maximum driving torque and reduced driver bit cam-out. The square drive hex ball detent bits and hex-shank impact duty bits are designed for use with a drill chuck. While the wire detent bits are made for use in magnetic bit holders exclusively. McFeely’s Robertson Square Drive bits also each have a durable colored plating that corresponds to bit size for easy identification.

As a guide our Square Drive screws use the following driver bit sizes. In special cases a non-standard driver bit size is used for example a #7/8 trim head screw generally has a #1 sized recess to avoid breakage with the undersized head.

Driver Bit Color Codes
Screw Size Driver Size Hand Driver Color (normally)
#4 #0 Bit Light Yellow
#5, 6, 7 #1 Bit Medium Green
#8, 9, 10 #2 Bit Red
#12, 14 #3 Bit Black
#5/16 in. & up #4 Bit Un–coded;
