Confirmat Style Connecting Screws

Origins: Europeans pioneered the development of man-made materials for use in cabinetry. Medium Density Fiber Board (MDF) and Particle Board offer inexpensive but dimensionally true and stable cabinet materials. These are often found with a melamine plastic coating that facilitates cleaning and eliminates an extra step in the finishing process. One down side to these materials is their notoriously poor ability to hold fasteners.

Knock-down assembly is a trademark attribute of European cabinetry and it is not uncommon for Europeans to move their existing cabinets to a new house. Often, these cabinets even utilize a common hanging rail found in many European homes. The doors can be easily removed and the boxes can be broken down for transportation. Confirmat style screws are designed to be able to be removed and reinserted without damaging the man made materials.

If you assemble melamine cabinets or work with Particle Board or Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF), these unique fasteners have been specially designed to make your life easier. The large diameter shoulder beneath the head acts much like a steel dowel pin and locks the shank in position to minimize the possibility of board failure. This creates a remarkably strong and stiff joint that generally does not require glue. Screws require a pilot hole through both pieces of material. Simply clamp the pieces together and drill with a specialized 3-step drill bit. Specially designed screw caps are available to fit a hole in the drive recess.
