Ignore the dangers of cross grain construction and at best you’ll probably be explaining big cracks. Table top fasteners are one of the best ways to keep tops attached yet allow for wood movement. Just rip a saw kerf or route a 3/32 slot in the apron about 1/2 in from the edge slip in one leg of the stamped steel clip and fasten the other leg down using a #8 or #10 Round Washer head screw (order separately).

This is the second time that I ordered these for a project. These are made out of a good grade steel and work as they are supposed to. tI used these fasteners on my work bench to hold the top down and when I move it I usually grab it from the top and these fasteners haven't bent or anything. The bench weights in at about 200 pounds. I bought more of these for some other table top fastening that I have planned.Price is great and McFeely's delivered these fast.
