Barrel Bolts provide one of the best solutions for installing
homemade storm shutters if your home’s windows are inset by at least
2 inches and the exterior is masonry, wood, or portland cement
stucco (do not use on EFIS stucco exteriors (Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems-Generally these are over foam)), They are easy to
build, install quickly without the need for tools, and are easy to
remove. Like most home-made storm shutters, these do not meet the
specifications of the South Florida Building Code. However, they are
recommended by FEMA.
Construction involves sizing 5/8" or 3/4" plywood for a snug fit
in the window opening, then attaching barrel bolts every 18" or
so, with at least one barrel bolt on each edge. Finally, the
locations of the barrel bolts are marked and 5/16" holes are
drilled into the siding .
Barrel bolt kits include: (4) Heavy Duty 4" x 1/4"d barrel bolts, and (25)
anti-vibration nuts, flat washers, and machine screws. Hardware and screws are zinc plated for moderate corrosion resistance.
