The Freud Doweling Joiner is easy to use with a rack and pinion adjustable fence with positive detents at 0º, 22.5º, 45º, and 90º. Bits are 32 mm from center-to-center which makes it great for shelf pins as well. Bits can also be adjusted for even spacing of repetitive holes. The joiner can be used with bits from 3/16" to 1/2" (5 mm – 12 mm) diameters. It also accepts standard 10 mm shank boring bits. Comes with two 1/4" bits. I bought this tool after considerable research on the Internet, which included many glowing testimonials and convincing advertising. I initially tried to use it to dowel 1 3/4" thick hardwood components of a heavy-duty shelf; I used two 1/2" (expensive) wood bits made specifically for this machine. After very careful measuring and registration, I could not make the components line up accurately; they were out of alignment by as much as 1/16", which was completely unacceptable. Further, it required considerable force to push the bits into the hardwood, and one of the bits came loose during the drilling. In frustration, I ended up using manual doweling techniques to finish the project. Perhaps the tool will work better with smaller diameter bits and softer wood, but for the expense and hassle I experienced, it was a waste of money.
