Comments about 5/16-18 Brass Threaded Insert:
Depending on wood grain any insert may raise the grain during installation. A simple jig that applies downward pressure surrounding the pre-drilled hole will minimize lifting. Also, I find that by NOT adding a slight countersink to the hole, it will cause the grain to lift less, due to the knife edge-like threads on these inserts.

I first tried installing these in a 1/2" through hole made with a twist drill. With lubricant and lots of muscle, I did get them into the walnut I was working with. I chamfer the edge of the holes to avoid tearing the wood. Today I installed more of the inserts but used a Forstner bit instead, in a blind hole. I still used some screw lube. Everything went smoothly, with very reasonable installation force. Good product. I have had other brands that collapsed the threads when trying to install them. These did not!
Difficult to install
Quite difficult to install in hardwoods. Helps to chamfer the hole to avoid splitting the wood surface, and use screw lube, but they are very tight for the specified 1/2" hole. Finding a larger drill bit is another trick altogether. A 13 mm metric bit may help. At least they did go in, unlike some others I have that are inferior brass, where the threads just collapse.

Great quality. Worked well. Much better than what you get at your local box stores.
