The Cooper and His Trade is the first book on coopering written by a cooper. Kenneth Kilby comes from a family tradition of coopering in England and was apprenticed to the trade and practiced for many years. The book is divided into two parts. The first discusses materials, tools, and the roles of white, dry and wet coopers. The second part gives a social history of coopering from the early times through the twentieth century. The book is illustrated throughout with 56 plates and 87 drawings, each chapter also has a bibliography for further reading.
