Bob Flexner is more than just a widely recognized wood finishing expert - he has mastered the ability to communicate sometimes confusing information clearly and understandably. In this book he builds a foundation on the nature of wood and the proper methods to prepare it for finishing so the reader is prepared to understand why various finishes work as they do. Later chapters explain the differences between popular finishes such as WaterLox® and Watco®, expose numerous finishing myths (including the popular misconception that furniture polish replaces natural oils in the wood), and provide extensive tables and charts for quick reference. Additional “Problem - Cause - Solution” tables that not only help you solve problems quickly, they help you understand why the problem occurred in the first place. Now in full color, this completely revised and updated edition of 1994’s Understanding Wood Finishing includes additional chapters and information that make it a valuable addition to your woodworking library - even if you have the 1994 edition! 308 pgs., softcover. rev 2005.

Comments about Understanding Wood Finishing:
This book debunks the myths about finishes and finishing as well as giving the history and science behind each type of finish. The author also gives practical guidelines for applying each type of finish. However, armed with the information presented in this book, one can experiment on his own to achieve results that works for him.I was a professional refinisher for many years and the earlier edition of this book inspired me to experiment with different types of finishes and different methods of applying them. As a result, I developed a process that my clients raved about.
