As most woodworkers are aware, as of January 1, 2004, the pressure treated lumber industry has voluntarily switched from CCA chemical processes to alternative treating methods such as ACQ. While significant testing has been performed on galvanized screws to ensure their compatibility with the new treatment processes, to date stainless steel is the only corrosion resistant material to have gained widespread acceptance for use with these new materials. ProMax™ Optimized Thread Length™: What It Means and Why You’ll Like It!Deck screws are a good example of Optimized Thread Length. The screws normally used to install 2 x 4’s or 2 x 6’s for decking are 3 inches long and have 1 inch of unthreaded shank. Since 2 x 4 and 2 x 6 deck material is 1-1/2 inches thick, the threads bridge the joint, as shown, resulting in an uneven and unsightly surface, or screws that are over-driven trying to “pull the board down.” ProMax™ screws are different: Thread length is optimized to eliminate crossthreading, and the 1/8” length system allows use of the longest possible screw. In most cases, the smooth shank and self-drilling point allow installation without predrilling! Just select a screw that provides an unthreaded shank length equal to or slightly greater than the material thickness being fastened.

Comments about #10 x 2-7/8'' 305 Stainless Steel ProMax Screws:
I am building a 44' X 12' redwood deck (with treated joists). I bought the 1500 count bucket of these screws. I was warned against using a square head drive screw, but went ahead with it because of the price. Hind sight is 20/20. I should've spent a little (actually alot) more and went with a star drive screw! The square drive cammed out easily and I had to predrill every screw, not to mention the screw would grab the bit and had to be wrenched out (I eventually discovered a technique that worked to cleanly dislodge the bit from the screw head). About 20% of the screws were bent right out of the bucket. The bent screws were still useable, but required caution when driving them, which slowed me down considerably. These screws would be okay for a smaller project, but I won't use them again. I would bite the bullet and go with a more expensive and stronger screw. Overall, these screws cost me about twice the amount of time I had estimated (and a bigger headache/sore back) to screw down the decking due to bent screws, soft metal, and square heads.

This is the best screw for 5/4 and 2x treated lumber. The screw penetrates easily and the long ProMax shaft allows the screw to "suck" the boards together. Stainless steel is soft, however, and the square drive head can cam out. I'd love to see this screw in a star drive configuration. That would make it "perfect".
