Use them wherever a finished appearance is desirable. Note that black oxide is primarily a decorative coating, and provides minimal corrosion resistance. I use these screws in place of the ones provided with small table top fasteners. The square drive makes the application a breeze and the black color is perfect with the fasteners (although they are out-of-sight under the table...I know they match!).Great product.
