Torque washers increase the bearing area under a carriage bolt’s head, and prevent it from spinning as it is tightened. They are ideal for use in constructing swing sets, docks and decks. Torque washers have four prongs that bite into the lumber to prevent spinning, and a central square hole for the carriage bolt under-head square “nut.” They work best with softwoods and man-made composite lumber and are not likely to give good results with tropical hardwoods like Ipe. I bought these to install a plank floor on my old farm orchard trailer. I have never seen these before and decided to try them. if you have ever had the head of a carriage bolt spin while putting on the nuts, these are like having an extra hand to hold the bolt still plus they prevent the bolts from pulling thru the wood. I will be using them on other projects where I need to use carriage bolts.

I build outdoor furniture and use a lot of carriage bolts. Torque washers allow greater tightening without the carriage bolt heads sinking into your wood. These washers just make a stronger more attractive finished project

I used these to attach 3/4 inch CDX plywood with carriage bolts to the deck of a small kit trailer I built. I would have given the item 5 stars, but one of the washers ended up deforming and spinning in place as I tightened the nut on the other side. I believe that the problem could have been avoided if the washers were made of slightly thicker steel. Overall I'm very happy with the product and McFeely's price. [...]
Necessity for carriage bolts in wood

Finally you can put some real torque on carriage bolts and pull two pieces together. With todays fast growth lumber that twists and bows, these are a necessity for being able to coerce joints together. They are a bit pricey, but worth it.
