Tech Tip: Pre-Thread the Hole
When installing solid brass or silicon bronze screws, clamp the work together tightly, drill an undersized pilot hole (1/64 to 1/32 under), then drive a STEEL screw of the same size as the brass screw to cut threads. Remove the steel screw and install the correct screw, being careful not to over-torque it. Lubricate the screw before installation with wax or
Akempucky (part #LA-0300). An alternative to pre-threading is to drill a pilot hole larger than the screw shank by 1/64 to 1/32.
